Apple iOS 5 Downloading Problems

For die-hard Apple fans, the arrival of the new iOS 5 Apple Operating system has been long awaited, but problems downloading the software are not quite as welcome.

The free software update, which promises 200 new features, has been so popular that Apple's servers appear to have struggled to keep up with demand.  Many users complained on Apple forums that the download was taking time, with some having to retry many times.  Others blame software bugs for "bricking" phones.
Technology consultant Jay Freeman said the problem was down to over-demand. But others thought the problems could be more serious.  One member of the public claimed that he experienced a hardware fault on his iPhone as a result of the download.  Stating that “if [he] had not updated the phone, it would be in perfect working order today".

Nokia to Cut 7,000 Worldwide

From 2012, Nokia’s refocus on the smartphone market will result in 7,000 jobs being cut worldwide.

4,000 jobs will be cut completely, including 700 from across the UK, whereas 3,000 staff will find themselves reshuffled into outsourcing and consultancy group Accenture.  From next year, Accenture will take over Nokia's Symbian software product, so that the mobile giants can concentrate on their relationship with Microsoft.

Nokia has been slow to respond to the smartphone threat from competitors such as Apple's iPhone and phones using Google's Android system, and has long been a key investor concern.

The firm is hoping that their recent deal with Microsoft to jointly develop smartphone technology, and their impending shake-up will increase their capacity for smartphone development.

Nokia loses 2 executives in a week!

Anssi Vanjoki only started with Nokia in July 2010, but only two months later he has already handed in his notice. That is the second high-profile executive to quit the Mobile phone giant in the space of a week.

Last Friday Microsoft’s Stephen Elop was appointed as the firms new chief executive. He is the first non-Finn to head Nokia.

On his first day in the job Mr. Vanjoki seemed determined to lead Nokia’s fightback against the companies biggest smartphone competitors. Despite being the world's biggest smartphone seller, Nokia has been losing the publicity battle with Google's Android operating system and Apple's iPhone.

He will now serve his six months notice. The announcements come ahead of Nokia World, the firm's annual conference, which begins on the 14 September in London.
