HTC V’s Apple (with Google’s Help)

HTC have brought a fresh grievance to the ongoing war with Apple, filing their third complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

The Taiwanese smartphone maker claims that Apple's computers and mobile devices infringe patents involving wi-fi capability and processor communication technology.

The legal tussle between HTC and Apple has been a well publiscised one, but they are not the only company going head to head with Apple.  Samsung Electronics, which makes the Galaxy series of smartphones and tablet PCs, has also been fighting a legal battle against Apple.

Both HTC and Samsung use the Android operating system, suggesting that this is becoming more than just a simple disagreement between manufacturers.  There is a suggestion that this is very much a battle between Apple and Android.  Whilst Apple currently has the upper hand, the combined force of Google, HTC and Samsung could be a huge force to be reckoned with…it’s an interesting watch…

IBM marks 30 years of PC, by saying goodbye?

Dr. Mark Dean, one of the engineers who worked on the original personal computer, believes that PCs are no longer the leading edge of computing. No single device has taken the PC's place, he said, instead it has been replaced by the socially-mediated innovation it has fostered.

He made the claim in a blog post commemorating 30 years since the launch of the first IBM personal computer. They may have not been the first to produce a personal computer, but the 5150 launched on the 12^th August 1981, did set the standard of design around which many desktops have been built.

Dr. Dean, does still believe that PC’s will be “much-used” in the future, but are no longer the force of innovation that they once were.  Revealing that even he has overhauled the use of his PC and his primary computer was now a tablet.  The powerful changes, originally initiated by the PC are just getting started as we work in a more efficient way, driven by changes in society.  These are undoubtedly exciting times in the world of new technology.

Apple Becomes 'Star Performer'

Apple have overtaken Nokia and Samsung in becoming the biggest Smartphone Vendor worldwide. 

The mobile phone makers shipped 361 million handsets in the second quarter of this year, up 13% on the same period in 2010, according to a new report; Smartphone volumes reached 110 million units.

Nokia continues to be the biggest maker of all types of handsets, but their unexciting touch phone portfolio is weighing down the mobile giant’s market share.  The number two handset maker, Samsung, is certainly breathing down their neck shipping 74 million units and their market share rising to just above 20%.  By comparison, Nokia’s market share dropped to 25%, it’s lowest since 1999.

Tablets go to war in Las Vegas

Between the Thursday and Sunday last week, innovators and industry leaders took to the battle at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and it was the tablets that were making the headlines.

It has been estimated there were over 100 tablet computers on display at the annual gadget show.  Google boasted a number of devices powered by their Android operating system at the show, one of which has caused quite a stir.

Apple has sold 7.5m iPad’s since its release, marking Apple, quite clearly, as the one to beat.  However, Motorola's XOOM has been hailed by a number of bloggers and reviewers as a possible iPad killer, even though the Android 3.0 software which it will run on is not finalized yet. 

Motorola was only able to show a prototype of XOOM, with a final version ready to ship in the US in the next couple of months. There is no official advice as to when it will be available for sale in Europe at this stage or more importantly, the price of the device.

In order to wet your whistle though, it has a 10.1 capacitive screen with the ability to show full HD video playback. It will also feature the expected features like accelerometer, gyroscope and Adobe Flash and there will be a rear and a front facing camera for making video calls.

Of course it wouldn’t be much of a battle unless, in response to the gauntlet being laid, there was speculation from the other team about a soon to be released upgrade or better still the mouth watering prospect of a release from HP that will really throw the cat among the pigeons.  In other words, watch this space; the battle of the tablets is just heating up.

Bagged an Apple bargain

As you know, we love technology here at Adodo, but perhaps not as much as Marco Boglione, an Italian Businessman who has just bought one of the first batch of Apple personal computers for £133,250 ($210,000).


The Apple I was bought over the phone at a Christies Auction by Mr. Boglione.  It came with its original packaging and a signed sales letter from Apple co-founder and current chief executive Steve Jobs. However, it was missing its keyboard, display and power supply.  One of only 200 ever made, the computer originally sold for $666.66 when it was introduced in 1976.


Marco’s brother, Francesco Boglione, was at the auction house on Tuesday, and said his brother had bid for the piece of technology history "because he loves computers". He added; that it was likely that the computer would be restored to working order before joining the collection.


The Apple I's processor works 1,000 times slower than today's Apple iPad and costs £132,821 more!! Mad or passionate, we are undecided about Mr. Boglione, but we take our hats off to you…

iPads only for the rich

A Nielsen study suggests that Tablet computers are only owned by a high-earning minority.

The study found that only 4% of the 5,000 quizzed own iPads, compared to 6% for e-book readers and 25% for smartphones.



Interestingly it also found that users were not inclined to download any extra programmes onto the device, with only 9% of the iPad owners quizzed admitting to doing it. Of those that had bought apps, games, books and music were the most popular extras.


The research also revealed that iPad owners tend to be younger, with 63% of them under 35 years old, and nearly two-thirds being male.

Blackberry Playbook verses the Apple iPad

The latest player in a highly competitive computer tablet market is the Blackberry Playbook, and is set to be a long-awaited rival the Apple iPad.



It is one of the first business-centric devices in the tablet market with Bluetooth and wi-fi included; BlackBerry users can also tether their phone for a 3G connection, making internet on the move easy. RIM is pushing the angle that it will be ideal for enterprise and business and that security will be at the heart of everything it does. However, they have also made it very clear that it will appeal to the everyday user aswell.


A full list of specs is yet to be published but it features a 7-inch screen, two video cameras and will not use Blackberry's latest operating system, instead relying on that of QNX; a company RIM recently acquired.
The Playbook was unveiled after much anticipation at the Blackberry developer conference in San Francisco. It is set for release in early 2011, and whilst they have been reluctant to comment on the comparisons made with the iPad, it is creating a real buzz in the tablet market.

Apple profits sore!

Concerns about the Apple iPod4 have been reduced as the company have just revealed “phenomenal” quarterly figures.
 Wall Street forecasts were completely undone by Apple’s profit figures which have been boosted by the sales of Mac computers and the introduction of the iPad.

 Apple's revenues rose to $15.7bn, well ahead of analysts' forecasts of about $14.75bn.


"It was a phenomenal quarter that exceeded our expectations all around, including the most successful product launch in Apple's history with iPhone 4," said Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive.

"iPad is off to a terrific start, more people are buying Macs than ever before, and we have amazing new products still to come this year," he said.

 The company reported net income for the three months to 26 June of $3.25bn (£2.1bn), or $3.51 a share, up from $1.83bn for the quarter last year.


The news sent Apple shares up 3.4% in after-hours trading, and go some way to relieve investors' concerns about the quality of the iPhone 4.

Suicides in China as the iPad hits the shelves in the UK

Despite the recent Global release of the iPad, one Taiwanese electronics company has been in the news for all of the wrong reasons. Foxconn has recently had a number of its workers committing suicide amongst complaints of feeling lonely whilst at work.

In an attempt to prevent any further tragedies, Foxconn has brought a counsellor in to the firm and upped wages by 70% to boost morale. They are also introducing more leisure facilities, although the facilities that are already in place are rarely used. Some workers do up to and above 100 hours a month overtime, one Foxcomm employee claimed.

To get the suggested pay rise that is set to start in October, workers first have to pass a performance test lasting three months.

There have been 10 suicides at the Taiwan firm's Shenzhen factory in 2010.

Apple iPad's release TODAY!!

Customers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK can finally pick up their shiny new tablet that Apple fanatics across the Atlantic have been so actively championing these past few weeks.

The iPad will be stocked in 139 Currys and PC World stores across the UK today which could provide a welcome alternative to queuing outside the Apple Store.

Pricing might come as a bit of a blow to some fans though, as the iPad has come out a little worse for wear after a fight over currency conversion. The Wi-Fi only, 16GB model translates from $500 to a hefty £429; a good £90 premium for the privilege of living in the UK.

In an attempt to to steal a march on Apple's iPad ahead of today's UK launch - Dell announced on Tuesday that their Android-powered mini tablet, the Dell Streak, will be released on O2 in early June.

The Streak will be available exclusively on O2 in 'early June', although an exact release date has not been confirmed. Price and tariff details will also be announced soon, O2 said.
