HTC V’s Apple (with Google’s Help)

HTC have brought a fresh grievance to the ongoing war with Apple, filing their third complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

The Taiwanese smartphone maker claims that Apple's computers and mobile devices infringe patents involving wi-fi capability and processor communication technology.

The legal tussle between HTC and Apple has been a well publiscised one, but they are not the only company going head to head with Apple.  Samsung Electronics, which makes the Galaxy series of smartphones and tablet PCs, has also been fighting a legal battle against Apple.

Both HTC and Samsung use the Android operating system, suggesting that this is becoming more than just a simple disagreement between manufacturers.  There is a suggestion that this is very much a battle between Apple and Android.  Whilst Apple currently has the upper hand, the combined force of Google, HTC and Samsung could be a huge force to be reckoned with…it’s an interesting watch…

Google to Buy Motorola Mobility Subject to Shareholders

Google is taking a high-stakes gamble in the global smartphone war by making a move to buy Motorola Mobility.  The internet giant’s have announced a deal worth $12.5bn (£7.7bn).
A joint statement said the boards of both companies had unanimously approved the deal, which should be completed by the end of this year, or early in 2012.
Earlier this year, Motorola split into two separate companies.  The Mobility side of the business is responsible for developing and manufacturing mobile phones, whilst Motorola Solutions covers wider technologies for corporate customers and governments.
Shares in Motorola Mobility jumped 56% by the close of trading in New York on Monday, to $38.13, still below the offer price of $40 per share. Shares in Google fell 1.8%.  Interestingly, shares in Nokia have risen as well, reinforcing speculation that they too are a bidding target, with Microsoft the potential bidder.

Talk Talk Offer Security from the Server

Internet giants, Talk Talk, are about to offer their customers the option of filtering malicious or offensive material out of their broadband service from centralized server level.  They claim to be the first major ISP to offer such a service.

TalkTalk's Home Safe runs on the company's central computer system and sits between the web and individual home connections.  The anti-virus system works by scanning a site that someone wants to visit to see if it harbors malicious programs. Those found to be clean will be put on a "white list" for 24 hours.

Parents worried about their children seeing adult material will be able to log on to a web page and define their own content filters, so that sites containing pornography or online gambling, for example, can be blocked completely.

However, the ingenious selling point, will be the option to put timed locks on certain websites, such as Facebook or game portals, to stop children viewing them when they should be doing school homework.

Rik Ferguson, senior security researcher at Trend Micro is not entirely impressed; one of his most significant concerns is the danger posed by larger sites frequently hit by threats.  He suggested that the 24-hour "all clear" white list might not work for sites such as Facebook due to the frequency and speed that rogue apps are developed.
