Ring Tone Therapy

It is well recognised that Japan are heads and shoulders above the rest of the world in mobile phone technology: handsets that can pick up TV channels have been standard for years and in many shops payments can be made by swiping a phone over a sensor.

However, if you have ever sat on public transport whilst a fellow passenger has been playing a noise resembling ‘something-like’ music for the duration of your journey; then, like me, you may struggle with the latest mobile craze to come out of Japan.

Across the “Land of the Rising Sun” the arrival of spring is bringing out the cherry blossom but it is also causing problems for hay fever sufferers. As we are heading into British Summertime, pay attention! A company called the Japan Ringing Tone Laboratory claims that it has discovered a cure for sufferers.

For relief from the symptons of hay fever, sufferers need only wait for a call on their mobile phone. If you hold your handset up to your nose as it rings, the sound is supposed to dislodge pollen. A seperate therapeutic ring tone is for those trying to lose weight. So watch this space!

8 signs that technology's taken over your life!

1. You have never sat through an entire movie without having at least one device on your body beep or buzz.

2. You think of the gadgets in your office as "friends," but you forget to send your father a birthday card.

3. You back up your data every day.

4. You know more about the computer than about all of your friends.

5. You own a set of itty-bitty screw-drivers and you actually know where they are.

6. You have ended friendships because of irreconcilably different opinions about which is better, the Blackberry or the iPhone.

7. You pack the laptop computer first for any trip.

8. You are reading this from a screen.

Snow Ready?

December 2009 saw temperatures in the UK drop to almost record breaking lows. Travel conditions became perilous, with road closures, rail cancellations and air disruption rife. Widespread School closures caused even more havoc, which according to the Federation of Small Businesses, had a significant knock on affect for many companies through lost working days.

Before the snow became such a problem, we had the threat of the swine flu pandemic bringing the country to a stand still. The reality was far less dramatic, but businesses did see unusually high rates of employee absenteeism.

Neither one of these threats have been completely conquered, and even if they had, the truth of the matter is that there is always another potential threat around the corner. Today, businesses can take steps to improve their communication and information technology infrastructures to buffer the effect of an outbreak on their daily operations. This is not necessarily as complicated or expensive as it sounds.

One of these steps is switching to a business VoIP service, which allows employees full and secure access to the business communications network of their company from their homes. The flexibility and features of this service makes it suitable for all types of organisations, but in particular those that are mutil-sited. It allows for employees to be just as efficient when they are outside of the office, as they are in the office. This means that if they are contagious, they can work from home without the risk of spreading illnesses among their peers. Furthermore, if they are stranded due to bad weather, they can continue to work without disruption.

To overcome the effects of a national crisis, businesses need to make sure that they have a flexible working policy in place to avoid unexpeted downtime, and ensure employees that can’t make it into work can continue working productively from home, or indeed wherever they are.
