£2.1m Broadband Pledge from NCC

Nottinghamshire County Council is“chipping in” to the central government funding pledge to improve the county’sbroadband access.

InAugust, the Government provisionally allocated £4.25m to Nottinghamshire CountyCouncil to improve broadband infrastructure county wide. However with 23.7% of properties inNottinghamshire having no or limited broadband access, the county council hasdecided to invest a further £2.1m.

CouncillorKeith Girling, deputy cabinet member for culture and community, said: "Atthe moment we are losing businesses to South Yorkshirebecause broadband is better for them there.

"We've got to look at itsensibly. Rural areas depend on good broadband and it is up to us to make ithappen."

But the county council saidit needed Nottinghamshire's district and borough councils to match the fundingto ensure the "vital" broadband improvements. Furthermore, the countycouncil is seeking £8.5m from whichever telecommunications operator isappointed to carry out the improvements. Work is not expected to start until 2013.

A total 1,750 IT bosses were questionedin a report by IT group EMC that suggests almost three-quarters of firms and public sector organisations acrossnine European countries may not fully recover their computer systems or dataafter an IT failure.

The survey that covered Germany,France, Italy, Spain,Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourgand Russia as well as the

claimed74% were "not very confident" they could fully restore their networks. Furthermore, 54% admitted they had lost dataor suffered systems downtime in the past 12 months.

Its reportfound that the most common cause of data loss and downtime was hardwarefailure, followed by power outage and software malfunction.

Mobile Customer Service is Better

New Ofcom research reveals that consumers are more satisfied with theirmobile phone provider than they are with landline or broadband suppliers.

In September the communication regulators interviewed 3,000people, quizzing them on recent contact from their providers and the levels ofservice that they received. The results showed that whilst service ratingsfor landlines had improved with BT, Sky and Talk Talk since 2009, on average,these satisfaction levels were still below those for mobile services.

It seems broadband speeds are still a major bone of contentionand the underlying reason for many customer complaints. Consumers having to contact their providersto change the deals that they signed up for proved the most common gripe fromdissatisfied customers.

The telecommunicationindustry gets a lot of bad press for poor service, overcomplicated tariffs andfor tying customers into long term contracts. However, there are still some good guys out there that put a strong emphasison customer service, simple tariffs and 30 days rolling contracts. Contact Lenses of the future?

It seems Scientists are a step closerto new technology that, if approved, could allow users to read floating textsand emails right in front of their eyes, Terminator-style.

After a series of successful animaltrials, these futuristic contact lenses could be a lot closer than we think. Researchers at Washington Universitywho are working on the device say early tests show it is safe and feasible.

There are still wrinkles to iron out, like finding a good powersource. As currently, their crude prototype device can only work if it iswithin centimetres of the wireless battery.

Initial safety tests in rabbits have gone well, with no obviousadverse effects, which has given the researchers renewed faith about thedevice's possibilities. They envisagehundreds more pixels could be embedded in the flexible lens to produce complexholographic images. For example, driverscould wear them to see journey directions or their vehicle's speed projectedonto the windscreen.

The researchers in Washingtonare not the only team working on this kind of technology. Swiss company, Sensimedhave already brought to market, a smart contact lens that uses inbuilt computertechnology to monitor pressure inside the eye to keep tabs on the eye conditionglaucoma.

Broadband Speeds Drop by 35% In the Evenings

According to comparison site uSwitch, UK broadband speeds drop by an average of 35%from their off-peak highs during the evenings when most people go online.

Thereport said that peaksurf times were between 7pm and 9pm, meaning that was the slowest time to beonline. It went on to say that the besttime to be online was between 2am and 3am.

There were alsohuge regional variations between evening and early morning surfing times. Users in Evesham, Worcestershire, fared worst,according to the survey, with a massive 69% drop-off between off-peak morningand evening surfing.

Broadband speedis becoming more important as bandwidth-hungry services such as on-demand TVbecome more popular. Telecoms regulatorOfcom recently revealed that British households download an average of 17gigabytes of data every month over their home broadband connections.

Critics say consumers are being misled by internet serviceproviders who continue to advertise their maximum broadband speeds, even thoughmany users do not get them.

Welsh ‘notspots’ Prevent Competitive Business

Tourism chiefs claimthat a lack of fast broadband is preventing companies based in Walesfrom being able to compete.

The Wales Tourism Alliance said"tech-savvy" visitors expected make to bookings online and then tostay connected during their trip. OnePembrokeshire hotelier even spent £8,000 putting in wireless broadband to solvethe ‘notspot’ problem faced by so many in Wales.

However, Bristol-based firm, Avonline believethey have a solution. They claim thattheir service uses a powerful satellite over Europelaunched earlier this year to bring a guaranteed minimum 6mbps service. Avonline said it was starting its UK promotion in Wales due to Ofcom's assessment ofthe poor broadband provision.

Aspokeswoman said the Welsh government did not promote or endorse any individualcompany, system or technology within the broadband support scheme. According to the Welsh government said therewere more than 100 active applications from Pembrokeshire for its broadbandsupport scheme, including five community schemes.

Africa’s Mobile Boom

After Asia, it seems Africahas the biggest mobile market in the world. It certainly has the fastest-growing according to an association of worldwide mobile phoneoperators.

The number of subscribers on the continent has grown almost 20%each year for the past five years, the GSM Association report on Africa says. Itexpects there will be more than 735 million subscribers by the end of 2012. Analysts believe that the poor and expensivelandline service in Africa is the cause for risingmobile phone usage.

Nigeria

has the highest number of mobile phonesubscriptions in Africa - more than 93million, representing 16% of the continent's total mobile subscriptions, GSMAsays.

The report saysAfrican countries have allocated far less spectrum to mobile services thanEurope, the Americas and Asia, which inhibits connectivity to many people in ruralareas. It has been suggested that totake full advantage of the rising interest in mobile connectivity, Africancountries need to allocate more spectrum for the provision of mobile broadbandservices, as well as introduce tax cuts for the industry.

National Campaign Warns of Smartphone Scams

We’ve been talking about it for monthsbut now a national computer securitycampaign is urging smartphone users to do more to protect themselves fromunwittingly downloading malware applications.

Ajoint initiative between the government, police and industry, called Get SafeOnline, said it was concerned that users of smartphones, such as Androiddevices, were not taking steps to protect their devices.

Their claim; is that that there has been an increase insmartphone malware as the market has grown. As predicted, criminals are typically creating Trojan copies ofreputable apps and tricking users into installing them. MP’s Want Mobile Operators to Get on with It

A committee of UK MPsis urging mobile operators to stop fighting over how to share out the airwavesthat will deliver next-generation services and get on with it.

The switch-over to digital TV has been key toproviding the much-needed bandwidth for data services following the exponentialrise of smartphones. The result freed upa spectrum of airwaves that are now being fought over by the top mobileoperators.

Thespectrum being auctioned is particularly valuable because it is low frequencyand therefore covers greater distances. Regulator Ofcom hopes to hold the salemid-2012, meaning that the

is on track to be one of the last European countries to hold its 4G auction.

Amidst a complex list of complaints, Ofcom hasmade clear that it wants Three to remain as a competitor in the UK mobilelandscape because it has ensured that consumers get innovative services and lowprices. Therefore, in its proposals forthe spectrum auctions the watchdog set mechanisms to ensure that Three got aportion of the 4G spectrum at a minimum price. This angered O2 and Vodafone who threatened legal action over thefloors, claiming they amounted to state-aid for Three.

Three, Vodafone, O2 and Everything, Everywhereare all planning to meet with Ofcom and the Government during the secondconsultation period in December to try and decide how the auction shouldwork.

Apple Blames Bugs for Battery Problems

Apple has finally made a statement thatadmits to "a few bugs" in itslatest mobile operating system iOS 5.

Apple's servers were overwhelmed by demand for iOS 5 when it wasreleased last month, but ever since its release, there have been thousands ofcomplaints about poor battery life posted on Apple's forums. In some cases, people claimed that theirphone battery was draining by up to 15% every hour, even when the handset wasnot being used.

Initially Applewould not comment on the matter but have now issued a statement: "A smallnumber of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5devices," it said.

"We havefound a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a softwareupdate to address those in a few weeks," it added.

It seems that Apple is certainly starting to feel the pressurefrom competitor challenges on the global stage, with vendors using Google’sAndroid Operating System turning up the heat.

Analyst firm Canalys revealed that HTC has become the number onevendor in the

,overtaking Samsung, and pushing Apple into third place.

IBM Appoint first Female Chief Executive

For the first time ever, IBM hasappointed a female Chief Executive.

Virginia Rometty, currently a senior vice president, willtake over from the current chief executive, Sam Palmisano, in January. MrPalmisano, who took the top job in 2002, will step aside whilst remainingchairman of IBM.

Commentators describe, Ms. Rometty, known tomost as “Ginni”, as the ‘logical’ choice, given her experience running thelargest portion of the business by revenue.

Nokia to be Reborn with Windows Phone

Nokia have shown faith in the future ofWindows Phone and launched two new smartphones based on Microsoft's new operating system.

The Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710 mark thebeginning of Nokia's fight back against Apple's iPhone and rivals usingGoogle's Android software. Untilrecently, Nokia, were the world's largest maker of smartphones. All future Nokia smartphones will be built onthe Windows Phone 7.5 operating system,otherwise known as Mango.

New boss, Stephen Elop, believes that the launch of the newrange, that includes four new basic phones, will mark the "rebirth"of Nokia.

No Link between Cancer and Mobile Phones According to New Study

The health risks associated with mobilephone use have been much debated over the last 20years, but the latest studysuggests that there is no link between mobile phones and brain cancer.

The study led by the Instituteof Cancer Epidemiology in Denmark lookedat more than 350,000 people with mobile phones over an 18-year period. The researchers concluded that users were atno greater risk than anyone else of developing brain cancer. The findings,published on the British Medical Journal website, come after a series of studieshave come to similar conclusions.

However, there has also been some research casting doubt onmobile phone safety, prompting the World Health Organization to warn that theycould still be carcinogenic.

HTC Dealt Disappointment in their battle with Apple

HTC has faced a major blow in theirongoing legal battle with Apple over patents.

HTC had asked the court to ban imports of several Appleproducts in to the USciting patent infringements. However, TheUS International Trade Commission (ITC) has ruled that Apple did not violatepatents as claimed by HTC in a complaint lodged last year.

This is a further knock to HTC, whose shares fell 6% afterthe ruling. Over the summer theTaiwanese phone maker was also found to have infringed two iPhone patents in acase brought by Apple at the ITC. Despitethe result, HTC are sticking to their guns.

"This is only one step of many in theselegal proceedings. We are confident we have a strong case for the ITC appealsprocess and are fully prepared to protect our intellectual property," saidGrace Lei, HTC's general counsel.

Dr. Dennis Ritchie, has died

Pioneering computer scientist, Dr. Dennis M. Ritchie, who helped shape the modern digitalera by creating software tools that power things as diverse as search engineslike Google and smartphones, was found dead on Wednesday at his home. He was70.

Dr. Ritchie, who lived alone, was in frailhealth in recent years after treatment for prostate cancer and heart disease,said his brother Bill.

He was one of the creators of the hugelyinfluential Unix operating system and the equally pioneering C programminglanguage. A vast number of moderntechnologies depend on the work he and fellow programmers did on Unix and C inthe early days of the computer revolution.

Those paying respects said he was a"titan" of the industry whose influence was largely unknown. It is thought his influence could rival thatof Steve Jobs, but is just less visible.

Apple iOS 5 Downloading Problems

For die-hard Apple fans, the arrival ofthe new iOS 5 AppleOperating system has been long awaited, but problems downloading the software arenot quite as welcome.

The free software update, which promises 200 new features,has been so popular that Apple's servers appear to have struggled to keep upwith demand. Many users complained onApple forums that the download was taking time, with some having to retry manytimes. Others blame software bugs for"bricking" phones.

Technology consultant Jay Freeman said the problem was downto over-demand. But others thought the problems could be more serious. One member of the public claimed that he experienceda hardware fault on his iPhone as a result of the download. Stating that “if [he] had not updated thephone, it would be in perfect working order today".

Compensation Discussed for Blackberry Users

Consumer talk has turnedto compensation following the Global Blackberry Blackout, but Research InMotion (RIM) have yet to comment on the speculation.

Blackberry'sfounder Mike Lazaridis has said services are "fully restored" followinga three-day global blackout, but with millions of users affected and manyturning to twitter to express their anger, is their any way back?

This is the largest crash thefirm has ever experienced. Prior to the 2011 problems, the last significantblackout was in 2009. With no answers asto why the switch failed or why the back up failed to kick in, the nextpriority is a "root cause analysis" of why there was a core switchfailure within RIM's infrastructure. Although, the server problems are believed tohave originated at RIM's UKdata centre in Slough.

Whenquestioned on compensation for consumers following three days of disruption,Research In Motion declined to comment. However, some operators, such as Telefonica owner of the

'sO2, are mulling whether to provide compensation for affected users.

Unsurprisingly, many corporate clients haveswitched to Apple iPhone after they made a concerted effort to improve itssupport for secure business email systems. News that couldn’t come at a worst time for RIM, whohave been losing market share to Apple over the last few months. That said; Apple’s newly-released operating system, iOS 5, has been causingproblems for some users trying to download it this week!

So after a week of problems for smartphone users worldwide, it seems thatall new technology comes with niggles, and unforeseen difficulties – we caneither embrace new technology and understand this or stick with the tried andtested “brick” of a model that simply does the basics!

Problems will always occur, but the test of the supplier is how theyrecover from them. For the sake ofcompetition, let’s hope RIM bounces back!

Intel Join Android in the Smartphone Race

Samsung Vs Apple

Round 3 in the ongoing patent battlebetween Samsung and Apple has fallen in favour of Apple, but is Samsung on theropes or out for the count?

Initiallya Europe-wide ban was placed on the sale of Samsung Galaxy Tablet following a ruling that elements of the tablet were copied fromthe iPad. This was then lifted amidconcerns about the court's power to impose such a broad embargo. The latest hearingupholds the original decision in Apple's favour, and means the Galaxy Tab 10.1is again banned from sale across Germany.

The re-imposition, albeit only within one country, marks yetanother round in the ongoing patent battle between Apple and Samsung. Samsung phones have also been banned for salein the Netherlandsfollowing court action.

The two electronics giants currently face each other incourtrooms in Australia,North America and Asia.

HTC V’s Apple (with Google’s Help)

HTC have brought a fresh grievance tothe ongoing war with Apple, filing their third complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

The Taiwanesesmartphone maker claims that Apple's computers and mobile devicesinfringe patents involving wi-fi capability and processor communicationtechnology.

The legal tussle between HTC and Apple hasbeen a well publiscised one, but they are not the only company going head tohead with Apple. Samsung Electronics, which makes the Galaxy series of smartphones andtablet PCs, has also been fighting a legal battle against Apple.

BothHTC and Samsung use the Android operating system, suggesting that this isbecoming more than just a simple disagreement between manufacturers. There is a suggestion that this is very mucha battle between Apple and Android. Whilst Apple currently has the upper hand, the combined force of Google,HTC and Samsung could be a huge force to be reckoned with…it’s an interestingwatch…

Google and China – Friends at Last?

It’s good news for Google, as theChinese Government have renewed their licence for another year.

Therelationship between the Chinese Government and the Internet giants went sour in2010 when Google started to redirect Chinese users to its Hong Kong website due to concerns over censorship and hacking.

China

regulates content onthe internet through licensing and oversight of internet companies. This means sites such as Google's YouTube, Facebookand microblogging site Twitter are amongst the list of websites that arepopular in the international online community but censored in China.

Domestic Chinese internet companies, such assearch firm Baidu, are the market leaders in China. That is unlikely to change despite therenewed license secured by Google, but it does imply that all is not lost in China for theInternet Giants.

Yahoo Chief Executive Fired Over the Phone

Carol Bartz, the Chief Executive ofYahoo has been fired after two-and-a-half years in the top position.

Ms. Bartz was hired to run Yahoo in early 2009, taking overfrom co-founder Jerry Yang. To make hermark she made significant changes to the management team and cut jobs to saveon costs. She also shifted the focus of the traditionally search-oriented firmtowards more personalised content.

However, in 2011, Yahoo is still struggling to increase itsmarket share, as it faces increased competition from rivals such as Google andFacebook. Without the internet companymaking significant strides in search or social networking, two of the mostlucrative segments of the market, they are still a long way behind theirrivals.

Carol Bartz leadership came to an abrupt end as the Chairmanof the board ended her term over the phone with immediate effect. Larry Magid, a technology analyst at C-net, justifiedthe move stating that the company has not seen enough of a turnaround under Ms.Bartz's leadership.

Tim Morse, Yahoo's chief financial officer, will take overfrom Ms Bartz. Yahoo shares jumped more than 6% in after-hours trading afternews of the firing broke, indicating they would trade higher when Wall Streetopened for business on Wednesday.

The Revolution of Mobile Broadband Rumbles On

Nearly half of the countries internetusers are now accessing the web via mobile connections according the Office forNational Statistics.

In 2010only 31% of people surveyed were using their mobile devices to access theinternet, that figure is now up to 45%. The most significant increase affected 16to 24-year-olds who use mobiles.

The popularity of 3G broadband did not necessarily mean thatmore people were going online overall. Mostinterestingly, the ONS survey also found a dramatic rise in the use of wifihotspots - a seven-fold increase since 2011 - suggesting that the rise of 3Ghas done little to slow demand for free and paid-for wireless access.

TheFinancial Times is the latest Corporation to challenge the might of Apple. Followingmonths of negotiations, they have resorted to withdrawing their app for iPhones and iPads.

3 Price Hikes in 2 Years for BT Customers

BT’s residential customers are facing their third pricerise in the space of two years this December.

Call charges will riseby 5% on the 3^rd December 2011, following a 10% rise one year agoand another 9% rise in April this year. Customers will find UK landline calls will go up from 7.6p a minute to 7.95pa minute. Line rental prices are also set to rise. Calls to mobiles will stay the same althoughthere is no guarantee that this will remain the same next year.

"Areport from Ofcom shows the UKhas lower prices than the USA,Spain, Germany, Franceand Italy.The UKmarket is highly competitive," a BT spokesman said.

However, following the energy price hikes last month, MichaelPhillips, product director at price comparison website Homephonechoices.co.ukhas responded on behalf of consumers everywhere: "While BT's priceincreases of 5% or less may be in line with inflation, it will prove veryunpopular with households who are already feeling the pinch.”

The cynics among us maysay that it is a shameless attempt to lobby Westminster for the valuable wireless spectrum. However, but Mobileoperators, Three, claim that their 3G giveaway is for the greater good of ruralbroadband.

Threeare giving away 3G broadband to ruralareas struggling to get fixed line services. First to benefit will be residents ofGringley-on-the-Hill in North Nottinghamshirewho will receive 30 dongles and free data access for a year. It will also get public WIFI hotspots in thelocal pub and community centre. Theyhope to roll similar packages out to 10 communities across the country in thenext twelve months.

Intheir commitment to isolated communities, Three has formed a working group withthe Countryside Alliance and Race Online, the government-backed group that istrying to get more people using the net.

Thecompany has made no secret of their desire to purchase the lower-frequencyspectrum which can cover a much wider area and offers better indoor coveragethan their current high-frequency spectrum.

JeremyGreen, analyst with research firm Ovum, remains skeptical of Three’s truemotivation. "It is not as if Three is concerned about lack of access. Itwants to show off how good its network is and lobby for more spectrum."

Ofcom have issued the largest fine thatthey have ever enforced on a telecoms provider as TalkTalk and its Tiscali UK subsidiaryhave been fined £3m for incorrectly billing more than 65,000 customers forservices they had not received.

The punishment follows an investigation intothe two businesses that started in July 2010 as a result of more than 1,000complaints. TalkTalk blamed the billingerrors on the amalgamation of the Tiscali UK business following their purchaseof Tiscali UKin 2009.

In its ruling, Ofcom said, the telcoms companyhad wrongly issued bills to 62,000 customers, in particular those who hadclosed accounts, between 1 January and 1 November 2010. In April this year,Ofcom said that TalkTalk was the most complained about telecoms firm forlandline and broadband services.

TalkTalk has since paid more than £2.5m inrefunds and goodwill payments to affected customers.

Google is taking ahigh-stakes gamble in the global smartphone war by making a move to buy Motorola Mobility. The internet giant’s have announced a deal worth$12.5bn (£7.7bn).

A joint statement said the boards of bothcompanies had unanimously approved the deal, which should be completed by theend of this year, or early in 2012.

Earlier this year, Motorolasplit into two separate companies. TheMobility side of the business is responsible for developing and manufacturingmobile phones, whilst Motorola Solutions covers wider technologies forcorporate customers and governments.

Shares in Motorola Mobility jumped 56% by theclose of trading in New Yorkon Monday, to $38.13, still below the offer price of $40 per share. Shares inGoogle fell 1.8%. Interestingly, sharesin Nokia have risen as well, reinforcing speculation that they too are abidding target, with Microsoft the potential bidder.

Dr. Mark Dean, one of the engineers who worked on the original personal computer, believes that PCs are no longer theleading edge of computing. No single device has taken the PC's place, he said,instead it has been replaced by the socially-mediated innovation it hasfostered.

Apple Becomes 'Star Performer'

Apple have overtaken Nokia and Samsungin becoming the biggest Smartphone Vendor worldwide.

The mobile phone makers shipped 361million handsets in the second quarter of this year, up 13% on the same periodin 2010, according to a new report; Smartphone volumes reached 110 million units.

Nokia continues to be the biggest makerof all types of handsets, but their unexciting touch phone portfolio isweighing down the mobile giant’s market share. The number two handset maker, Samsung, is certainly breathing down theirneck shipping 74 million units and their market share rising to just above 20%. By comparison, Nokia’s market share droppedto 25%, it’s lowest since 1999.

Internet Service Providers Continue to Mislead

It is a well known fact that consumersin the past have received much slower broadband speeds than those claimed bythe ISP’s, but Ofcom have been clamping down on these instances of roguetrading for some time. However, it seemsthey are still not happy with the way the industry advertises.

Ofcom'sbiannual report into the state of the broadband market is urging changes toadvertising guidance "so that consumers are able to make more informeddecisions based on the adverts they see" said Ofcom chief executive EdRichards.

Almost half of broadband users arenow on packages with advertised speeds above 10Mbps but few achieve this. The AdvertisingStandards Authority (ASA) has also stepped in and is currently reviewing broadbandadvertising. Its report is expected in the next few months.

In accordance with their own advice, Ofcom has introduced a codeof practice to help inform the public about their likely speed before signingup to a service.

· Itrecommends that broadband customers should be given a speed range rather than asingle estimate of the maximum speed on their line.

· Italso suggests that users be allowed to leave their provider without penalty ifthey receive a maximum speed which is significantly below estimates.

Google created Android, Microsoftcreated Window’s Phone, now the creators of Firefox are venturing intodeveloping an operating system for mobile devices.

Theweb browser developers will draw upon a lot of the system developed by Google,but will write much of the code afresh. It will provide an obvious competitor to Android in particular becauseit will run on the same devices.

Theproject is very much in its “infancy” according to the team overseen by Mozilla(the creators of Firefox). However, theyhave already created some basic software from building blocks that are similarto those needed to get the OS running.

They are now publicising the project to root out experts in theMozilla community and elsewhere who could help and encouraged them to get in touchand sign on. They are big believers inOpen Source and want to work in "the way we think open source should bedone".

Hackers Hit Italian Soil

Data hacks so far this year have beenrife, and it seems that hackers are not tiring, as attention moves towardsItalian shores.

Hackers have started to release the 8Gbs worth ofsecret files stolen from an Italian cybercrime unit. The documents were allegedly taken from the network of the Italian CNAIPICwhich oversees the country's critical IT infrastructure. The attack is thought to be in retaliationfor arrests of Italian members of Anonymous.

Among the documents taken, there is information about a numberof Government offices from Australiaand the US. Preview images also shared by Anonymousreveal the management structure of CNAIPIC, pictures of staff, and a long listof all the documents that have been taken. CNAIPIC are yet to comment on the matter.

Ofcom Demand Rural Broadband Pricing Should Be Cut

The digital divide between town andcountry looks to be shrinking, as Ofcom rule that BT have to cut wholesalepricing.

Currently,BT is the only operator with equipment in many of the smaller telephoneexchanges, meaning that other ISP’s have to factor ‘renting costs’ into theirpricing plans. The result is that customersoften miss out on cheaper deals available in towns and cities.

Incities, many ISPs, other than BT, are able to offer consumers cheap broadbandthrough a system known as local loop unbundling (LLU), where they place theirown equipment in the exchange. This isdeemed ‘less economical’ in many rural areas, resulting in pricing beingaffected by the renting costs.

Ascompetition rises, this could be great news then for rural customers; however, thetelecoms regulator has not applied the reduced charges ruling to ADSL2+, anext-generation copper-wire technology which offers speeds of up to 24Mbps. The hope is that BT focus on investing in thenew technology.

Thepricing changes should begin from mid August, and under the ruling BT must cutits rates by 12% below inflation per year until March 2014.

In the meantime, Fujitsu is bidding for government money tocreate a fibre network for rural areas. Both Virgin Media and TalkTalk havesaid they will offer services on it if the bid is successful.

HTC Lose Out in Apple Ruling but Will Appeal

On Friday, the US International Trade Commissionruled that Taiwanese mobile phone company HTC, had infringed two ApplePatents. Apple had claimed that theirsmartphone rivals had infringed a total of 10 patents.

Theresponse from HTC has been to state that they will appeal; but if the decisionis not overturned it could result in the US banning some HTC imports. Shares in HTC fell 7% this morning as aresult, but the result of the appeal could have much wider implications for theindustry. The findings are only preliminaryand are subject to review by the full six-member committee in Washington. A final decision is due on 6December.

TheTaiwanese company is not the only firm wrestling with Apple over the rights totechnology, with the US firmalso in disputes with South Korea's Samsung and US-based Motorola.

As the phone hacking scandal rumbles onand the circle of deception continues to spiral upwards and outwards, serious questionsare being raised about the UK'seavesdropping laws.

Sean Hoare, former News of the World journalist, has allegedthat the newspaper paid police to track mobile phones and claimed that it waspossible to "ping" a handset's location for £300.

There is certainly no firm evidence to support the accusation, butif it were true it would undermine safeguards within the Regulation ofInvestigatory Powers Act. Under which, ahandful of officers have the authority to ask mobile networks to determine thelocation of a phone, based on information from nearby radio masts. Each request is supposed to be approved by asenior colleague. These sorts of checksare written into the law to prevent it from being abused.

The system is regulated and audited by the Interception ofCommunications Commissioner, Sir Paul Kennedy. Who in his most recent report discovered, found in 10% of cases wherelaw enforcement bodies sought communications information, there was poorcompliance with the rules.

Wales to get £57m for Superfast Broadband

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, hasannounced that Walesis to receive £57 million from Central Government to improve Broadbandcoverage.

Thenews comes just a week after an Ofcom report showed Walesto have the worst Broadband provision in the UK.

Mr.Hunt went on to claim that the boost to Wales’ technology infrastructure wouldensure 90% of Welsh homes and businesses will eventually be able to accesssuperfast broadband.

This time Apple claim that smartphonemakers HTC have infringed their patents, and have filed a complaint against theUS International Trade Commission (ITC) seeking an inquiry into the matter.

Just afew weeks ago, it was Apple and Samsung going head to head over the alleged copyingof designs and technology. Now, Appleare taking on the third-biggest mobile phone maker, by stock market value. Not for the first time either, as last yearthe American technology company filed a similar complaint against HTC accusingit of infringing as many as 20 of its patents.

Last year,HTC launched a counter attack, claiming that Apple was guilty of infringingpatents held by the Taiwanese company. They even went as far as trying to get iPhones, iPads, and iPods bannedfrom sale in the US.

HTC haveresolutely denied Apple’s allegations: "HTCis dismayed that Apple has resorted to competition in the courts rather thanthe market place," said Grace Lei, HTC's general counsel.

Interactive Broadband Map for the UK

An interactive map that shows the state of broadband around the UK has been launched by telecoms watchdog, Ofcom.

The map shows that that 68% of homes had a fixed connection with an average speed of 7.5Mbps (megabits per second). That residents of Luton and Newtonabbey were most likely to have access to superfast broadband (over 24Mbps), but most worryingly, that 14% of connected households remained in the slow lane with speeds of less than 2Mbps.

Ofcom hopes that the data will be useful to local authorities as they bid for money to bring faster services to their areas.

Cheaper to Roam in the EU

The European Commission has announced that it wants to cut “roaming” costs on mobile phones, and has introduced new rules aimed at reducing pricing in and around Europe.

There is currently a large price gap between using your phone at home and when you are abroad, with extensive “roaming” charges being enforced when calls are made or received, text messages sent or data downloaded.

Current EU roaming price caps will expire at the end of June 2012. The authorities fear that without putting more plans in place, prices could pick up to pre-2007 levels. However, the new, lower price caps would not come into force until July 2014, and would be introduced in stages.

The hope is that by then, mobile phone customers will be able to separate their national and overseas contracts and shop around. Keeping the same phone number, you will potentially be able to switch to a separate operator in another country, and get a cheaper deal for surfing the web.

A recent case of mobile phone abuse has cost a borough council thousands of pounds in unnecessary charges, highlighting the need for better mobile technology management and security at every level.

Smartphone Users Ignore Security

New research compiled in May 2011, following interviews with 1,000 UK smartphone owners, showed that users hold mobile network operators responsible for a variety of security issues including unexpected items on their bill, SMS test Phishing, mobile spam, malware and viruses and rogue applications.

The research, by AdaptiveMobile, suggests that users are more concerned about the data and information stored on their phone and the possibility of identity theft, than they are about the handset itself. Despite their fears they are also simultaneously leaving themselves exposed to mobile security risks. For example, 50% of respondents would be prepared to open an SMS text message from someone they did not know, 36% would open an email from someone they don’t know and 32% are saving log-in information such as passwords on their device.

A recent survey by One Poll on behalf of internet security firm, BullGuard, showed that 53% of users claimed that they are unaware of security software for smartphones, which the firm stated showed a lack of insight into the rising number of malicious threats affecting mobile phones.

In our upcoming June podcast, we highlight the recent press focus surrounding major data security breaches. The sort of news that has raised questions like; if a 19year old can hack the CIA’s network, what chance do the rest of us have?

It seems concerns are well founded, according to a report sponsored by networking firm Juniper Networks. 1,406 IT and IT security practitioners were surveyed by independent research firm Ponemon Institute.

From which, the research states, a considerable 84 % of businesses in the UK, France and Germany have suffered at least one security breach in the last year.

In addition:

31 % of respondents said that there had been a significant rise in the frequency of cyber attacks in the same period.

76 % added that the attacks themselves had become more severe, or harder to detect and prevent.

The survey also revealed that mobile devices like laptops and smartphones were most at risk.

34 % of respondents said that security breaches occurred as a result of insecure laptops.

29 % said that mobile devices were to blame.

Ofcom Gives Green Light to Spectrum Trade

With the massive rise in Smartphone use, bandwidth is becoming a huge issue, putting an ever increasing demand on networks. So the UK regulator Ofcom, has given phone operators the green light to trade with each other in an effort to combat the problem.

The controversial will enable networks to sell off the airwaves they own in the 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz frequency bands. The move comes ahead of a crucial spectrum auction next year that will usher in 4G data services. The UK has been slow in offering a more level-playing field compared to other nations.

The merger of T-mobile and Orange forced Ofcom to change their original plans and now Everything Everywhere, the parent company of these two networks, are set to be the biggest beneficiaries of spectrum trading.

Three is the least happy, as they have the least spectrum to trade, and said in a statement.

"This move simply allows those who have been gifted access to public spectrum to profit from it, with no benefit for UK taxpayers."

The World Wide Web Just got Wider

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) have voted to increase the number of available website domain suffixes, which will be the most major change to the internet in years.

In principle internet address names will end with almost any word and be in any language. However, it will cost you. It will cost $185,000 (£114,000) to apply for the suffixes, and companies would need to show they have a legitimate claim to the name they are buying.

Applications will begin in January 2012 with corporations and cities expected to be amongst the first. Despite the confidence Icann have in their decision; they admit that "No one can predict where this historic decision will take us."

Research in Motion (RIM), the manufacturer behind Blackberry phones has missed even its lowered profit forecasts and lowered its fiscal predictions for the full year.

Profits are significantly down on this time last year, and with company shares also taking a blow, it seems there are challenges ahead for RIM. The delays in new product introductions mean that the company is losing support from customers and carriers.

According to Peter Misek at Jefferies and Co in New York, “People are not waiting. They’re going to other platforms.”

Nokia Online to Close

Nokia continue to slimline their services, with online stores across Europe closing their virtual doors.

France, Spain and the Netherlands were the first to go, and rumour has it that the UK store will be next. Whilst there is no official confirmation as yet, a Nokia affiliate received a notification that suggested Nokia UK, the online store will be closing at the end of June. Which certainly sounds conceivable as it is not the first store to close. Regional Nokia sites will continue to provide support for Nokia owners.

Two Major Security Breaches

In the US, thousands of Citibank customers have had their Data stolen by hackers. Citigroup is the latest in a string of high profile companies to be targeted by cyber criminals, with the latest domestic threat being to the NHS.

Lulz Security, a notorious hacker group, that claims to be behind the recent hack on Sony, have warned the NHS that its computer networks are vulnerable to cyber attack.

They sent an email to NHS administrators revealing it had found a way to breach the service's network stating that "We mean you no harm and only want to help you fix your tech issues". The Department of Health was quick to deny that any patient information was at risk.

Rich Green, the chief technology officer at Nokia has taken a leave of absence from the Mobile Giants.

In the official statement from the company Mr. Green has left due to a “personal matter” and not given a date for his return. However, a Finnish newspaper quoted sources inside Nokia saying he had left because of differences over strategy and would not return.

Mr. Green was the proponent for the recently sidelined MeeGo mobile operating system. The decision to adopt Microsoft's Windows Phone software for its smartphones was made by Nokia’s boss Stephen Elop earlier this year.

It has been a tough month for Nokia, in which it announced that sales of its phones during the second quarter of the year would be substantially below previous forecasts. Mr. Green’s departure is said to have "no impact on our product strategy or our expected product launch timelines" according to Nokia’s official statement.

Mobile Radiation Top Ten

A recent report resulted in the World Health Organisation (WHO) classifying mobile phones as “possibly carcinogenic” to humans. This has led to health experts analysing the top 10 smartphones for radiation emissions, and Motorola comes out on top!

A US environmental group has gathered information that concludes Motorola make seven of the top ten mobiles that emit the most radiation. Top of the pile is the Motorola Bravo, which emits 1.59 watts per kilogram (W/Kg) of radiation. The measure is defined by the rate at which the body absorbs energy from radio frequency electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones.

Big Test for New Internet Address System

In the early 1980’s a way of identifying individual connections to a computer network was devised and called IPv4. A maximum of 4.3bn addresses were available, but three decades later, we are running out.

The rapid growth in PCs, smartphones and other internet connected devices means those addresses are close to being used up, with only an estimated 80 million still to be allocated.

Thus, IPv6 is facing is now facing its biggest test to date; Google, Yahoo, Microsoft Bing and Facebook are among the companies switching-on IPv6 versions of their websites for the one day trial. The trial is being used as an opportunity to test the technology but also as an awareness-raising exercise.

Groups involved in IPv6 day say that everyone will have to make the change eventually. It is thought that some home users and companies may require new network equipment but users should not worry at this stage if they are not switched over.

Are you smart with your phone?

Many organisations now allow employees to use the smartphone of their choice for work related activities. This is based on the evidence that it increases employee satisfaction and productivity. However, the organisations don’t fully comprehend the extent of the security challenges this creates.

Most also think that allowing employees to use the smartphones of their choice either has no impact on or only somewhat decreases the overall security of their company’s networks and information. This is an indication that organisations might not be educating employees on the potential security risks these devices create and how to best keep them and the data on and accessible through them protected.

Given that completely unmanaged personal use of a work-related smartphone could potentially open security holes in an organisations network, there needs to be an urgent review of security.

The need to password protect mobile devices is well communicated, but guidelines around the downloading of apps for smartphones is less so. Given the fact that the majority of malicious malware for smartphones involves legitimate apps that have been Trojanized and re-published on third-party app hosting sites, organisations need to do better at communicating policies and/or best practices related to downloading apps.

WHO links Mobile Use and Cancer

A new study from the World Health Organisation's cancer research agency has reignited the concerns surrounding the possible link between mobile phone use and brain cancer.

The agency research has said mobile phones are "possibly carcinogenic" a review of the research suggests an increased risk of a malignant type of brain cancer cannot be ruled out. However, they have concluded that it was "not clearly established that it does cause cancer in humans".

Ed Yong, head of health information at Cancer Research UK, said: "The WHO's verdict means that there is some evidence linking mobile phones to cancer but it is too weak to draw strong conclusions from.

The majority of previous studies have concluded that there is no link between cancer and mobile phone use, and that remains the view of the majority. It is clear, that given the potential consequences of the most recent announcement, further research is needed to clarify the risk. If you are concerned, the suggestion is to take pragmatic measures to reduce exposure such as hands free devices or texting.

PayPal to Sue Google over NFC

Google is facing a law suit courtesy of PayPal who claim that the internet search giant stole the technology for turning smartphones into digital wallets.

The argument resolves around a former employee, Osama Beider who PayPal alleges he obtained trade secrets before becoming Google’s vice president of payments in January 2011.

Google have yet to see a copy of the complaint and have therefore declined to comment until a later date. The technology called Near Field Communications is widely used in Japan, it has recently gone live in the UK, and is set for launch in the US in this summer.
